I’m Aoife Ruane-Kelly: a teacher, psychologist, dyslexia specialist, and a mum who’s walked this journey myself.
I created Acorn to Oak to help parents understand how reading develops, and to make the process feel calm, connected and doable.
Over the years, I’ve worked with children, families and schools – seeing the process from every side. I’ve lectured student teachers, collaborated with the Department of Education on literacy and inclusion, and supported hundreds of parents who just wanted to understand how to help their child.
The Perspectives That Shape My Work
- Teacher – I know the classroom realities: time pressure, mixed abilities and how small supports make a big difference.
- Psychologist – I see the child beneath the struggle -their emotions, motivation and confidence.
- Dyslexia Specialist -I understand the science of reading and how to make it work for every learner.
- Mum with Lived Experience – I’ve walked this road at home. I know what it feels like when things don’t come easily and how much parents care.
These perspectives come together in everything I create – practical tools, gentle guidance and reassurance that learning can feel lighter.
Why Acorn to Oak Exists
Acorn to Oak was built to help parents feel supported, informed and confident.
It’s not about turning parents into teachers – it’s about giving them understanding, so they can walk beside their child with calm and clarity.
Great things grow from small, steady steps – especially when rooted in knowledge, patience and support.
